What is a Vape Pen Battery?

Oil vape pens contain three major parts. The oil, the battery, and the cartridge, which is also known as an atomizer. The vape pen battery provides the correct amount of power to vaporize oil inside the cartridge. It’s important to make sure that the battery is not too powerful for your vape. This mistake could burn out the cartridge and make it unusable. Chances are that you already have a disposable pre-filled vape cartridge, and are just looking for a battery to use. With that out of the way, let’s dive into which battery you need.

What are 510 Threaded Batteries?

510 threaded batteries are the most commonly used type of vape pen batteries on the market today. The term “510 thread” refers to the thread design found on the battery, which tells you which type of cartridges will fit on the battery. 510 thread batteries are the universal standard thread type in the vape industry, and is found in almost 90% of vape batteries. There are some exceptions, such as "Pods" or larger types of batteries, but we’ll be focusing specifically on 510 threaded cartridge batteries. It may make sense on paper, but not all 510 thread cartridges and batteries are compatible. Some batteries can be too powerful to use with certain cartridges.

That being said, most cartridge brands and battery brands are compatible. The majority of pre-filled store bought cartridges will have 510 threads. In some cases, a small magnetic adapter is used to secure the cartridge to the battery. This usually involves screwing a small piece onto the 510 thread cartridge anyway. 510 threads are our favorite because they allow you to have the largest selection, and customize your vape pen for the best vaping experience.

What is the Best Voltage for a Dab Pen?

Vape pen batteries are available in a wide range of voltages and also variable voltage designs.  The most common voltage range found on 510 thread batteries is 3.3v - 4.8v. In general, most slim vape pens will be in the lower 3.3v range. This is the correct voltage for most oil cartridges but does not provide enough power for ceramic or wickless cartridges. These types of cartridges offer better vapor quality and produce more vapor, but require a voltage of 3.7 or higher. If you’re trying to find the right battery, it’s best to start at the lowest voltage possible and gauge how much vapor is being produced. You can always increase the voltage or try a higher voltage battery.

What does MAH Mean?

MAH stands for milliampere-hour, which essentially means the duration of the battery life.

While shopping for vape pen batteries, you’ll probably see MAH listed as a spec. Batteries with a higher MAH will last for a longer period of time before you need to charge them again. Vape pens tend to range from 280-900 mah. The higher end is usually reserved for high voltage or large atomizers. For use with a standard cartridge battery, any mah will work. Even a standard 300 mah battery should last you for an entire day. At the end of the day, the size of the battery should come down to personal preference and usage habits.

Vape Pen Chargers

When you buy a vape pen battery, it will generally include a charger for use with that battery. It’s important to use only the charger that came with the battery to ensure that you do not harm the battery or cause it to short out. Using the wrong charger can fry your battery, which essentially kills it. Even if the charging port matches another charger you own, using a faster charger is simply not worth it.

Buttonless Vape Batteries

Most commonly referred to as buttonless, auto draw, or slim vape pens, this is the most common cartridge vape pen you will find. These types of batteries regulate the voltage based on how hard you inhale and are only activated when you inhale. Typically, these batteries have a voltage of 3.3v. These batteries should only be charged with the provided charger because they run low voltage and should be charged slower to prevent the risk of burning them out. Buttonless batteries are convenient because you don't need to click any button 5 times in a row to turn them on or off. You also don't have to worry about accidentally pressing a button when the vape is in your pocket.

Benefits:

  • Easy to use and operate, even for beginners
  • Low voltage for smooth vapor
  • Compatible with almost all 510-threaded cartridges
  • Looks like an e-cigarette
  • Can hold a charge for days
  • Won't accidentally light in your pocket

Vape Pen Batteries with a Button

The second most common type of vape pen battery is 510 thread with buttons. Button vape pens require you to press and hold the button when you want to vape. To turn on these types of vape pens, you need to click the button 5 times in a row. The same method is used for turning off the vape pen. These types of batteries are typically a standard voltage, which is around 3.7 volts, and work great with most pre-filled vape cartridges. These types of batteries allow you to completely turn off the battery when you are not using it.

Benefits:

  • Complete on/off control
  • Works with all 510 cartridges
  • Control power flow

Variable Voltage Vape Pen Batteries

Variable voltage vape batteries provide the ultimate control over power and battery function. You can switch between different voltages with a dial at the bottom of the battery or by clicking a button to find your preference. The good thing about variable voltage batteries is that they work with almost every 510 threaded cartridges because you can change the voltage. If you prefer larger hits with bigger vapor clouds, you can crank up the voltage. Or, if you appreciate smaller, tastier vapor hits, you can keep the voltage low. Variable voltage vape pens come in a wide variety of styles and shapes.

Benefits:

  • Widest control of compatibility
  • On/off Control
  • Longer battery life
  • Customizable vape experience

Discrete and Concealable Vape Pen Batteries

These are our personal favorite types of vape pen batteries. Many people prefer to remain discreet when vaping and these vape batteries will do just that. Unlike other batteries where the cartridge attaches to the end of the battery, concealable batteries contain the cartridge inside and hide it from sight. This allows you to stay discreet, with some even fitting in the palm of your hand. These types of batteries are the most compact, making it easier to take on the go and throw in your bag, purse or pocket.

Benefits:

  • Discreet design
  • Keep your cartridge safe and hidden
  • Works with all slim cartridges
  • Built in charger
  • Variable voltage

Ever-Growing Popularity of Vapes

We’ve all heard about the health benefits of vaporizing for a while now. It’s better for the lungs than smoking, there is less combustion and so on. This has caused an explosion of vaporizer products on the market, particularly in the last few years.

Larger, desktop vaporizers have been a favorite for quite a while now, but like everything else in the technological world, vaporizers on the market get smaller and smaller every year.

Portable vaporizers come in many styles and colors. They can be used for dry herbs, wax and more. Everyone is on the go these days, in their cars with their smart phones. Portable vaporizers can come in handy just about anywhere because they are small and unobtrusive.

In fact, vaporizer pens and other assorted mobile vaporizers are just about the hottest products in the toker market today. It’s hard to go anywhere without seeing at least one person puffing on their pen.

There are also a lot of products that come closer to vaporizing than burning, making them “vaporizer-like.” One of these is the solar hand pipe, which uses a magnifying lens and the sun’s rays for combustion, but the combustion is at a much lower temperature.

Vaporizing is the future. Smaller pipes and water pipes will always be around, but the bulk of the toker product market in the coming years will be dominated by vaporizers, both the desktop variety and portable variety. The styles will multiply and each product will be more efficient than the last, and the bounds of smallness will be tested. How small can vaporizers get? Time will tell.

In the meantime, tokers can enjoy the endless variety of vaporizers already available.
