14mm vs 18mm vs 10mm Joints: Sizing Guide
Few things are more frustrating than ordering a shiny new bowl, opening the package, and finding out it doesn't fit. It happens all the time, and it's almost always down to one thing: joint size.
The good news is that joint sizing is simple once you know what to look for. In this guide we'll explain the three standard sizes, how to measure your piece in under a minute, what "male" and "female" actually mean, and when an adapter can save the day.
The Three Joint Sizes, Side by Side
Almost every bong, bubbler and dab rig uses one of three joint sizes:
|
Joint |
Actual diameter |
Most common on |
Accessory range |
|---|---|---|---|
|
10mm |
About 10mm |
Mini dab rigs, small bubblers |
Smallest selection |
|
14mm |
About 14.5mm |
Most bongs and dab rigs |
Largest selection |
|
18mm |
About 18.8mm |
Larger bongs, downstem tops |
Wide selection |
You might notice the names are a little rounded. A "14mm" joint is really closer to 14.5mm, and an "18mm" joint is closer to 18.8mm. These sizes come from the standard ground-glass joints used in lab glassware, which is great news for you: it means a 14mm bowl from one brand will fit a 14mm joint from another.
How to Find Your Joint Size
The fastest way to find your size is to grab a ruler and measure the opening. Measure across the inside of a female joint, or across the outside of a male joint, then round to the nearest standard size.
Before you even reach for a ruler, check whether the size is already printed on the glass near the joint or listed on the product page. Many pieces have it marked.
If not, here's how to read your measurement: anything around 10mm is a 10mm joint, anything around 14–15mm is a 14mm joint, and anything around 18–19mm is an 18mm joint. If you already own a bowl that fits, you can also test fit it. A matching bowl slides in snugly and sits straight without wobbling.
Male vs Female: What It Actually Means
This is where most mix-ups happen, so let's keep it simple. A male joint slides inside. A female joint is the opening that receives it. Your bowl or banger always needs to be the opposite gender of the joint on your piece.
Most bongs have a female joint, which means you'll be shopping for a male bowl. Some dab rigs have a male joint, in which case you'll need a female banger.
One more thing that trips people up: when you see a listing like "14mm male bowl," the gender describes the bowl itself, not your bong. So a 14mm male bowl fits a 14mm female joint.
45° vs 90°: Does the Angle Matter?
The angle tells you how the joint sits compared to the base of your piece. A 45° joint angles upward, while a 90° joint comes straight out the side. You'll want to match the angle so your bowl or banger sits upright.
Angle matters most with quartz bangers. Put a 90° banger on a 45° joint and the whole thing tilts, so the surface you're heating isn't level. Bowls are more forgiving, since most are shaped to sit naturally at the bong's angle. Our quartz banger guide goes deeper on this.
Don't Forget the Downstem
If you're replacing a downstem, there are actually two sizes to think about: the top (where it sits in your bong) and the bottom (where your bowl goes). A really common combo is "18/14," meaning an 18mm top with a 14mm bowl joint.
Length matters too. Measure from the joint inside your bong down to just above the bottom of the base. Too long and it won't fit; too short and it won't reach the water.
You'll find a full range of sizes in our replacement downstems, including our 18/14 diffused downstem.
So Which Joint Size Is Best?
If you're buying a new piece and have a choice, go with 14mm. It has the biggest selection of bowls, bangers, ash catchers and adapters, which makes replacing or upgrading parts easy down the road.
18mm is a solid choice if you like bigger bowls on a larger bong. And 10mm makes sense on very small dab rigs, where a lighter, smaller banger is part of the appeal, but keep in mind you'll have fewer accessories to choose from.
When You Need an Adapter
Adapters are the fix when your accessory doesn't match your joint's size, gender or angle. They let you use one bowl or banger across several different pieces.
|
Adapter type |
What it does |
Example |
|---|---|---|
|
Reducer |
Larger joint to a smaller one |
18mm male → 14mm female |
|
Expander |
Smaller joint to a larger one |
14mm male → 18mm female |
|
Gender changer |
Same size, swaps male/female |
14mm male → 14mm male |
|
Drop-down |
Lowers the accessory and adds a bend |
14mm female → 14mm male, 90° |
That said, adapters add a bit of height and one more piece to clean, so if there's a matching accessory available, that's usually the better route. When you do need one, check out our adapters and drop-downs, like this 14mm to 18mm adapter.
Common Sizing Mistakes to Avoid
The most common mistake we see is mixing up the bowl's gender with the bong's. Remember, the listing describes the accessory, so a female joint on your bong needs a male bowl.
Another is assuming every piece uses 14mm. It's the most popular size, but plenty of larger bongs use 18mm and many mini rigs use 10mm, so it's always worth a quick measurement. And finally, don't force a bowl that feels tight or crooked. If it doesn't slide in easily and sit straight, it's the wrong size, and forcing it can crack the joint.
The Bottom Line
Before you buy any bowl, banger or downstem, check three things: size, gender and angle. Get those right and everything will fit the first time. And if you're starting fresh, 14mm gives you the most options by far.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 14mm the same as 14.5mm?
Yes. "14mm" is the rounded name for the standard 14.5mm joint. Accessories sold as 14mm and 14.5mm fit the same pieces.
Will an 18mm bowl fit a 14mm bong?
No, not directly. You need an 18mm-to-14mm reducer, or a 14mm bowl. A mismatched bowl won't seal and may fall out or crack the joint.
How do I know if my joint is male or female?
If the accessory goes inside the joint, the joint is female. If the joint slides inside the accessory, it's male. Most bongs have female joints, and many dab rigs have either.
Why does my bowl feel loose?
Usually the size is wrong, or the joint has residue on it. Clean both surfaces, then check the size. A matching bowl should sit snugly and straight.
Do joint sizes vary between brands?
Very little. Most glass uses the same standard joint sizes, so a 14mm bowl from one brand should fit a 14mm joint from another. Hand-blown pieces can vary slightly.
