Traveling Tokers: 8 Smoking Essentials for a Road Trip

This blog post was originally published on November 20, 2015, and has been revised to include new travel smoking products and tips!

The key to having a blast on any road trip is finding the right balance of preparation and fun. If you’re a hardcore smoker, then your smoking supplies are probably at the top of your packing list. But should you really be packing up your whole smoking room for a trip out on the open road?

Even while traveling, you can still find plenty of great ways to smoke your dry herbs. With a little bit of planning, smoking dry herbs while on the road (or at your destination) can make for some great memories! Read on to learn how you can gear up for a flawless toker road trip.

Smoking Pieces for Traveling

First and foremost, you’ll need a great piece for the road. If you have a small, lightweight piece at home, then you might already be set. But if you’re protective about your prized pieces, then we have plenty of suggestions that will work great for on-the-road smoking!

1. For Delicious Hits: Travel Size Bong

Just because you’re leaving home doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to those super-cool bong rips! Smaller, travel-sized bongs allow you to enjoy the great taste of filtered smoke without carrying around a huge piece!

Larger 12” bongs might not be the ideal choice with a packed car. But there are plenty of smaller bongs that accomplish the same goal, and are better suited for use while traveling! These bongs can be stored in a backpack, duffel bag, or suitcase for discreet portability.

When you purchase a high-quality piece, there’s no reason to be worried about your bong breaking. You should still keep your bong safe, but stronger glass won’t break as easily as weaker pieces you might find in a brick and mortar headshop.

Alternatively, silicone bongs are another great choice for your toker road trip. Silicone can be compacted and bent, without ever running the risk of breaking. Not to mention, silicone bongs are known for top-notch rips!

2. For Concentrates: Travel Size Dab Rig

If you prefer concentrates over dry herbs, then you’re in luck! There are plenty of smaller dab rigs that make smoking concentrates away from home a blast.

Like travel-sized bongs, these dab rigs can be transported without taking up valuable car space, or having a revealing shape. Be sure to remember the rest of your dabbing supplies!

3. For Simplicity: Glass Pipe

Sometimes, taking it back to basics with a glass pipe is the way to go. Most bowls are small enough to fit anywhere: your backpack, stash jar, and maybe even your pocket. They’re the perfect travel companion when you’re looking for something discreet that still provides a great smoking experience! Don’t forget to corner the bowl when you’re smoking in a group.

4. For Maximum Portability: Dry Herb and Wax Vapes

Most vaporizers can fit in the palm of your hand. When finding a pocket-sized piece is your primary goal, vaporizers are a no-brainer. They’re small, convenient, and eliminate the need for a lighter!

There are two main types of vaporizers: dry herb vapes and wax vapes. Regardless of your preferences, you can find a vape that fits your needs.

Vapes also help smokers to reduce or eliminate the smell of smoke, but more on that later.

Smoking Accessories for Traveling

Adding a few basic toker accessories to your travel bag can drastically improve your smoking sessions. Fortunately, none of them are too bulky, either.

5. For Smoking and Dabbing: Lighter or Torch

First and foremost, you’ll want a way to light your dry herbs or concentrates.

Lighters are easy to pick up along the road, but why force yourself to spend money when you already have one? Chances are the lighter will fit in your stash jar, too.

Unfortunately, the same isn’t true for torches. If you prefer smoking concentrates, then don’t forget your torch.

6. For Breaking Up Dry Herbs: Grinder

No matter what your favorite method of smoking is, you’ll need a way to break up the dry herbs. Grinders are the best way to accomplish this, even if you’re traveling. They’re small, compact, and easy to store away anywhere. After a few twists, all of your dry herbs will be ready to smoke.

Your grinder also doubles as a convenient way to store dry herbs, as long as its stored inside an airtight, smell-proof container.

7. For Preventing Odors: Stash Container

If you’re concerned about the smell of your dry herbs, then it’s best to bring along a stash jar. Mason jars and vacuum sealed jars work best, and are reasonably priced. These glass jars keep your dry herbs concealed, fresh, and prevent odors from being released. If your stash jar is big enough, you may be able to fit all of your smoking supplies!

If you’re looking for something smaller, then bring along a doob tube! These plastic tubes are sturdy, and won’t be crushed under pressure. They’ll also prevent the smell of the dry herbs from escaping!

8. For Even Cooler Bong Hits: Ash Catcher

Even when you’re traveling light, bringing along an ash catcher can drastically improve your smoking sessions. These nifty bong accessories take your smoking game to the next level in two ways.

First, attaching an ash catcher to your bong helps filter the smoke, thanks to the included percolator. This means your bong will hit even easier and produce cooler smoke. Secondly, ash catchers keep your bong clean by preventing ash from entering the water chamber.

Travel Toker Tips: Hiding the Smell of Smoke On the Road

If you’re looking to keep a low profile during your toker road trip, then it’s best to hide the smell of the smoke. As we mentioned before, portable vapes are designed to prevent odors in the first place. But if you’re smoking dry herbs with a bong or bowl, there are a few other steps you can take.

  • Use air fresheners and febreeze to mask the smell.
  • Change your clothes, take a shower, wash your hands, and brush your teeth.
  • Smoke outside, rather than inside.
  • If you are smoking inside, ventilate the room with a fan, or contain the smell by placing a towel under the door.
  • Smoke in the shower, and exhale into the air vent.
